How It Works
Radiant floor heating works by circulating warm water through PEX tubing embedded in or under the floor. It heats objects and people directly rather than blowing hot air, making it feel comfortable at lower thermostat settings. Tile and stone floors are ideal because they conduct heat well and have low thermal resistance. Carpet is the worst choice because its insulating properties block heat transfer. Tube spacing affects output: 6-inch spacing provides more heat per square foot than 12-inch spacing but costs more in tubing. Water temperature typically ranges from 80 to 140 degrees F, with lower temperatures better for heat pump systems and higher temperatures needed for carpet-covered floors.
