How It Works

Energy Star is a government-backed certification that identifies products meeting strict energy efficiency guidelines. Energy Star certified HVAC equipment typically uses 10 to 30 percent less energy than standard models. For central air conditioners, Energy Star requires SEER 16 or higher versus the standard minimum of 14. For furnaces, Energy Star requires 97 percent AFUE or higher in northern climates versus the standard 80 percent. The higher upfront cost of Energy Star equipment is usually recovered through energy savings within 3 to 7 years, and the equipment continues saving money for its entire 15 to 20 year lifespan.
