How It Works
A properly sized ceiling fan can make a room feel 4 to 8 degrees cooler without lowering the actual temperature, allowing you to raise the thermostat and save energy. The key is matching fan size to room size. An undersized fan moves too little air; an oversized fan creates an uncomfortable wind tunnel effect. Fan blades should be 7 to 9 feet above the floor and at least 18 inches from any wall. In rooms with 8-foot ceilings, use a flush-mount (hugger) fan. For 9-foot ceilings, use a standard downrod. For taller ceilings, calculate the downrod length to position blades at 8 to 9 feet. In winter, reverse the fan direction to push warm air down from the ceiling.
